2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment was killed Tuesday 24 June 2008, during a firefight. He was on a deliberate operation against the Taliban in the Upper Sangin Valley when he was fatally wounded.

Private Joe Whittaker was a reserve soldier from 4 PARA and part of a 48 strong contingent of 4 PARA integrated into 2 PARA Battle Group for our tour.

Warrant Officer Class 2 Dan Shirley 

Dan was born on 1 December 1975 and grew up in his hometown of Leicester. He enlisted in the Army in August 1992, joining 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment. He later joined the Army Physical Training Corps in April 2004 and arrived at 13 Air Assault Support Regiment Royal Logistic Corps in June 2006. he was Killed during a Logistic Patrol on 27 June 2008 in Helmand.
