the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the Armed Forces.

The Garden in Palace Barracks remembers some of those who have lost their 
lives in Northern Ireland, The Falkland Islands, Kuwait, August 1990 - July 1991,
Iraq 2003, Aden - Radfan and other locations around the world including the United Kingdom.
The Memorial Custodian is also responsible for the Memorial Garden at
Thiepval Barracks, Lisburn, Co. Antrim.

There are still many reminders of the Second World war in Brunssum. In the memories and recollections of its citizens, for example. Or its war memorials. Sometimes, concerts are organised the commemorate the sacrifices made and the victory won. The scars of the Second World War are likewise present, such as the British War Cemetery, where 328 British soldiers found their final resting place.

The soldiers buried here paid the ultimate price for the battles they fought in the turbulent years of 1944 and 1945. The legacy they leave us is huge. They fell for our freedom, they fell for a just society, they fell for our forbears, for us and for our offspring. We have a duty to cherish this legacy in the spirit of their sacrifice. We should never fail to appreciate the value of democracy, freedom and independence, not least because our soil is drenched with the blood and tear of those who died for us.

Netherlands - Brunssum

Brunssum was liberated in September 1944 by U.S. forces; they were shortly afterwards followed by the British 43rd (Wessex) Division, who made their headquarters in the town, and in turn were succeeded by the 52nd (Lowland) Division. The first burials in the cemetery were made by an Advanced Dressing Station and a Casualty Clearing Station which were situated at Merkelbeek in November 1944 when the 43rd Division were engaged in clearing a triangle between the Rivers Roer and Maas. Later, other casualties were all brought back and buried in the same place; they included fifty men who were killed while clearing mines on the German border at the beginning of January 1945. Operations in the Geilenkirchen sector accounted for a great part of the casualties buried here. There are over 300 1939-1945 burials in this cemetery, they are made up entirely of soldiers of the British Army, of whom 1 remains unidentified.

My research has taken nearly 40 years and is sadly still ongoing as wars and conflicts show no sign of abating worldwide. I hope this site serves as an everlasting memorial to past, present and future Special Forces.

HMS Belfast served throughout the Second World War, playing a leading part in the destruction of the battle cruiser Scharnhorst, and also the Normandy Landings. In service with the Royal Navy until 1965, she was saved for the nation in 1971 as a unique reminder of Britain’s naval heritage.

Shortly after becoming Prime Minister in May 1940, Winston Churchill visited the Cabinet War Rooms to see for himself what preparations had been made to allow him and his War Cabinet to continue working throughout the expected air raids on London. It was there, in the underground Cabinet Room, he announced 'This is the room from which I will direct the war'.

SUPPORT OUR PARAS  A charitable initiative in support of The Parachute Regiment personnel and their families.
On Sunday 25th May Old Sarum Airfield near Salisbury will play host to an all-day event that will provide wonderful family entertainment and raise urgently needed money to support the families of those members of the Parachute Regiment who are casualties of current operations.

The present casualty rate suffered by the Parachute Regiment in Afghanistan is in danger of accelerating this year. So the importance of having adequate resources available to support the families of casualties is all too apparent ... E-Mail

The Regiment has battle honors from all over the world, from Marlborough's battles in the 18th century to Korea in 1953.
In World War I the Regiment raised the second largest number of battalions of any regiment in the Army - 87.

Formed in 1685, the King's Regiment now comprises the 1st or Regular Battalion, stationed with its families in Bourlon Barracks, Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire since March 2001, and the Territorial Army companies of the King's and Cheshire Regiment which has King's Regiment bases in Liverpool, Warrington, Manchester and Ashton-Under-Lyne. Until Easter 2002 when Her Majesty died, the Colonel in Chief was HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.
