On the 18th February 1956 an Avro York Aircraft chartered by the Royal Air Force to transport servicemen back to the United Kingdom after their tour of duty in the Canal Zone. The aircraft stopped over in Malta to refuel. Soon after take off smoke was seen coming from one of its engines, as the aircraft reached 1000 feet it suddenly nose dived into the ground. Killing its 5 civilian crew and all 45 passengers. 44 of the passengers were Royal Air Force personnel and the remaining passenger was an army private who was going home on compassionate leave. All those who died are buried in the Military Cemetery at Imtarfa in Malta. |
