Major Christopher John Dockerty was born in Wisbech on 12th October 1960.
He attended the local Grammar School, where he was a popular student due to his ready wit
and reputation as a sportsman, representing
his school at cricket and squash. He read politics and law at Durham University, where he gained an honours degree.
He was commissioned in the rank of Lieutenant into the Prince of Wales Own Regiment of Yorkshire in
1983. where he made his mark as
an officer of significant promise with an early vocation for work in Military Intelligence.
He was battalion Intelligence Officer for much of his Regiment’s 1985-1987 tour in South Armagh.
On the 2nd June 1994 together with other Intelligence staff Officers and members of the
Royal Ulster Constabulary’ Special Branch, he
was flying by a RAF Chinook helicopter, call sign ZD576 from Belfast to Inverness for a conference of United Kingdom intelligence specialists.
The RAF Chinook crashed into the mountainside on the Mull of Kintyre, killing all 29 passengers and crew.
But for the tragic accident Major Dockerty would have completed his duties in Northern Ireland
and returned to his Regiment, He was due to be married in September. A good man and a fine officer.
