Leonard Godden Aged 22. and Bombardier Terence Griffin Aged 24
A coach travelling from Manchester along the M62 was carrying
servicemen their wives and families back to Catterick camp in Yorkshire
after a weekend break. As the coach was approaching Huddersfield at
12-15am, The coach suddenly exploded ripping away the rear half. Police
believe that bombers had hid 50lbs of explosive in the rear luggage
compartment while it was parked up over the weekend in
Manchester with its luggage compartment unlocked. The compartment
reached under the rear seats of the crowded coach.
The men , women and children at the rear of the coach were sitting on a
time bomb. The explosion killed 11 of the back to camp
passengers including a family of four Cpl Haughton Aged 23 his Wife
Linda aged 22 and their two children Master Lee aged 5 and
Master Robert aged 2 along with Gnr Godden and Bombardier Griffin. 14
people were also injured in this Bomb Outrage on the 04-02-1974.

Killed 18th December 1975.
Both of these soldiers were actually killed together while manning an
OP/Sanga on the Derry Wall next to the entrance into the city on Strand Road. Both were serving members of 42 Hvy Regt RA stationed in Fallingbostell BFPO 38 Cfn McInnes was REME attached to 42 Hvy Regt, and attached to 18 Bty of that
regiment from the unit workshop for this tour.
Gnr MacDonald was a member of 18 Bty and not long due to be discharged on return to Germany in April 1976 NOTE:

M62 Coach Bomb Outrage |
On the 4th February 1974. A coach travelling from Manchester along the M62 was carrying servicemen their wives and families
back to Catterick camp in Yorkshire, after a weekend break. As the coach was approaching Huddersfield at 12.15am,
It suddenly exploded ripping away the rear half of the coach. Police believe that bombers had hid 50lbs of explosive in the
rear luggage compartment of the coach while it was parked up over the weekend in Manchester with its luggage compartment unlocked.
The compartment reached under the rear seat of the crowded coach. Men Women and children at the rear of the coach were virtually
sitting on a time-bomb. The Explosion killed eleven of the back to camp passengers including a family of four.

Hutchinson...
On the night of that incident we left
Manchester at 11pm for Catterick camp.
I was sat at the back and Fusilier Stephen Whalley was about half way down on the left of the coach.
As the we left Manchester Stephen asked me (Philip
Hutchinson) to swap seats as he wanted to talk to another one of his friends.
This I did and went to sit where he was sitting... After about an hour the bomb exploded injuring Stephen.
Fusilier Whalley died of his injuries three day later on the 7th February
1974
Fourteen others were injured.

During the present troubles in Northern Ireland from 1969 –2000.
The first soldier killed in the present troubles was Gunner Curtis Royal Artillery 6th February
1971,
and the last L/Bombadier Restorick Royal Artillery 12th February 1997.
(Let us hope and pray no more of our servicemen and servicewomen shall pay the ultimate price for peace in Northern Ireland)
