Royal Navy

The Senior Service (RN)

LT. A. R. SHIELDS. RN
22nd August 1988

Lieutenant Shields was a Royal Naval Recruiting Officer
based in the recruiting office in Belfast.
On his way home from work his car, which had been booby-trapped by the IRA, exploded at traffic lights,
fatally wounding him. He was the first and only Naval Officer killed during thirty years of the present conflict.
